Personal Travels

One of my latest cruise journeys delivered a high-impact blend of culture, adventure, and unforgettable family moments aboard Adventure of the Seas with Royal Caribbean.

One of the standout highlights across the 8 night cruise was observing wildlife in its natural ecosystem. There is something truly special about seeing animals thrive on their own terms. In the U.S. Virgin Islands, wild sea turtles trailed alongside us as we walked the pier, offering a powerful, up-close reminder of the beauty of marine life. Snorkeling opportunities across the islands, particularly in St. Maarten, gave us access to reef systems bursting with color, and biodiversity.

From the moment we docked in Puerto Rico, we found ourselves completely immersed in an environment defined by warmth, vibrancy, and authentic community. The people, the street art, the architecture, the food, the music—everything combined to create a destination experience that felt deeply personal. The wild chickens roaming the streets only added to the island’s unmistakable charm. In Puerto Rico, everyone truly feels like familia. We even leaned into the exploration side by hiring a private tour guide in Puerto Rico. While the decision felt a bit questionable at first, just because I was raised to not talk to strangers - don't get in cars with people you don't know - you know, the whole stranger danger speil - but it quickly turned into one of the best parts of the trip. Our guide was amazing and let us ask as many questions as we wanted. His English was choppy but it didn't impact our conversations much.

In-between port days, my youngest son came down with norovirus, prompting us to navigate over-the-counter medication written in Spanish at a Puerto Rican Walgreens. Thanks to Duolingo, the language barrier became nothing more than an opportunity for cultural immersion. Shortly after, I managed to break part of my foot tripping over a trash can. Truly on-brand for my family - something crazy is always bound to happen.

St. Maarten brought a playful twist. A water taxi transfer turned into an impromptu performance moment - I sang and danced, much to my family’s embarrassment. Here, I learned to haggle with vendors and purchased some Larimar jewelry - a rare, blue mineral found exclusively in the Dominican Republic and sold on nearby islands.

Now to the ship - The kids embraced their own micro-adventures thanks to dedicated onboard spaces, creating space for independence while still offering a sense of safety and structure. The cruise ship itself offered rock climbing, ice skating, water slides, and so many activities that engagement was guaranteed. And naturally, the unlimited food became a family favorite. Everyone pushed outside their culinary comfort zones, sampling global flavors and fully leveraging the all-you-can-eat model.

All in all, this cruise delivered a mix of cultural immersion, adventure, humor, disruption, and discovery - everything a memorable family vacation should have.
